A week of rain
hindered Ward's nighttime hunting and forced him to extend his efforts into daylight. He
is shown here at midday as he scans the ground from a hunting perch near the nest box. A
hunting perch is typically about fifteen feet off of the ground, while roosting perches
are near the tops of the largest trees in the area. He and June have been especially vocal
for the last week as they exchange classic hoots in the daytime and join for noisy nest
inspection visits at night. Fall is the time when newly fledged owls are on the move and
looking for unclaimed territories. Resident adults must therefore make a special effort to
advertise their ownership during this period.
Wally and Theodore are undoubtedly out searching for their own territories somewhere in eastern Massachusetts.
