Sibling Rivalry

June has tried many strategies for keeping Wally and Theodore from fighting during meals, but none has worked for long. In the top picture she is sitting on Wally with her full weight while feeding Theodore on the other side. Wally eventually clawed his way out by digging into the floor and extending his legs many times. The next picture shows the "wing cuff" in which June tries to hold the brothers down on opposite sides with her wings. This is an easier escape for Wally as he has grown too strong to be confined by a wing. Finally, the "body barricade" where Wally is confined on one side while Theodore is fed on the other is a little more effective. It usually takes Wally about five minutes to go over, under or around June and disrupt Theodore's feeding. The owlets ate well last night with at least three long feeding sessions and they have a full chipmunk and some rodent spare parts to work on today. It's raining again, but June has chosen to perch outside the nest for most of the morning anyway. She stays within fifty feet of the nest and returns every couple of hours to feed and referee. sitting on wally (6K)
