| June is now spending most of the daylight hours outside the nest box. She perches in nearby trees where she calls to the owlets with her whining call every fifteen to thirty seconds. Ward typically perches considerably further away and is shown here in his favorite spot as he preened June on May 6th. Note that Ward is about twenty percent smaller than June as is the case for the males in most owl species. | ![]() |
| Back in the nest box, the owlets are now doing quite a bit of very awkward wing flapping and Wally's wing span exceeds 14 inches. Theodore is shown here flapping his considerably shorter wings. The primary and secondary flight feathers are clearly barred on both owlets. They have not yet learned to eat on their own and June must return to feed them several time each day. She is forced to sit on Wally to prevent him from getting Theodore's share of the food. | ![]() |
