They Did It!

Theodore led the way as the owlets climbed and fluttered into a new world this morning. It started at 6:00am when Theodore jumped up from the nest box floor and forced himself into the doorway beside Wally. He then leaned over and grasped the owlet step with his rear toes before leaping to the owl rail. Soon he was doing winged leaps from one part of the owl rail to another as Wally looked on in awe. Ward and June were also watching from nearby branches as he made his next bold move. He confidently jumped from the rail to a nearby tree branch and was on his way up the trunk. Only a brief stopover to frolic on the roof of the owl box interrupted his departure. This was too much for Wally who promptly followed Theodore's example and started his own climb. While they both used their talons and beaks to grip the tree, most of the lift came from the flapping of their wings. Their wing flapping also allowed them to regain their balance on many occasions when it looked like they were destined to fall. On one occasion, Theodore hung upside down for almost a minute before he flapped his wings to right himself.
