It was
no surprise to see Wally perched in the doorway yesterday, but what happened next was
shocking. After looking up at Wally's tail for almost ten minutes, Theodore decided that
he wanted to join his brother. Forgetting that he had never even come close to making it
that far, he exploded off of the floor with such force that he almost knocked Wally
completely out of the nest box. Wally just managed to hold on as Theodore pushed him aside
to squeeze in on his left. Theodore enjoyed the view for almost five minutes before
leaving Wally alone and returning to the nest box floor. This episode transformed Theodore
from a panic stricken owlet desperately trying to dig his way through the floor to a
confident young owl, calmly preening his feathers in preparation for a journey. Both Ward
and June continue to work hard to prepare them for that journey. Ward makes frequent
nighttime food deliveries and June brings in food around the clock. Both are now calling
to the owlets frequently from nearby perches. Wally spent almost thirty minutes perched in
the doorway this morning and Theodore joined him for about ten minutes. Wally has been
intently studying the owl rail and has reached down to touch the owlet step with his beak
and talons many times. They are clearly ready to go. The only questions are when and
where.
