Getting Ready for Moving Day

It wasn't easy for Wally to sit in the corner while his brother ate an entire dove, but he was not given a choice. June must be getting concerned that Theodore will not be ready to leave with Wally in the next few days and is giving him special attention. He is still not as big as Wally and has made very little progress toward reaching the door. Meanwhile, Wally's huge wings (shown in the lower picture) have propelled him to the doorway four more times in the last twenty-four hours. The last two trips came this morning with no adults in sight to urge him on. He still looks very nervous when he gets up there and has only glanced down at the owl rail a few times before lowering himself back down into the nest. The young owls have also been doing a lot of head bobbing as they look out the doorway. This is something that adult owls do to help them judge the distance between near and far objects when they hunt. There is a lot more noise this morning with both Wally and Theodore wheezing and June frequently whining in the distance. She has stopped by once and entered the nest to preen the young owls. They have also been preening each other for the last few days.
