Strange Behavior

Wally and Theodore have still not attempted to climb the owlet ladder, but are even more active than yesterday. Their coordination has improved a lot and they are now learning to flap their wings within the confines of the nest. The very short beginnings of tail feathers are starting to appear on Wally. While the owlets continue to swallow whole mice when available, it is still necessary for June to chop up larger prey, such as squirrels, as she is pictured doing earlier today. For the first time, the owlets managed to eat side by side without fighting. They waited patiently as June parceled out the food.

Table Manners(9 KB)

Ward exhibited some very strange behavior yesterday when he spent about ten minutes clawing and gnawing behind the far side of the nest box. Because he was working on the far side of the box, I could hear, but not see his actions as the owlets reacted with alarm. When he did reveal himself, he was reaching up to bite into the tree trunk as seen here. Scars such as the one he is creating here are clearly visible on the tree trunk above the box and lead me to speculate that he is preparing a path up the tree trunk for the owlets. This, along with the owlets silence over the last few days, makes it quite possible that Peanut was in the top of this tree last year when Ward and June visited it several times in the days after his disappearance.
