The owlet's
growth rate appears to be accelerating and they are becoming more active in the nest. Some
of the "owl things" that they are starting to do include preening, head bobbing,
beak snapping, and wing flapping. June first started preening them four days ago and they
initially did not like it. They now compete to see who can get the best preening position,
much as they do for food. They have even been preening their own feathers for the last two
days. As the nest gets more crowded, it has become easier for June to trap Wally in the
corner, as she did in this picture, while she feeds Theodore. Neither of the owlets has
yet attempted to climb the owlet ladder, but it is not too soon to start thinking about
that. Barred owlets are supposed to leave the nest between the fourth and seventh week and
Wally will be four weeks old on Monday. Ward made two midday mouse deliveries yesterday
and many more last night. June is now perched outside the nest and is calling to the
owlets with her whining call every minute or so.
