| June is truly a beautiful creature as she
stretches her huge wing while perching near the nest. The hazy sunset makes her feathers
seem almost transparent as it does the red wings of the maple seeds on the branches around
her. She chose this low branch over the treetop roost that she normally shares with Ward
because it gives her a good view of the nest and lets her easily call to the owlets. June looks even more beautiful to Wally and Theodore when she has a mouse in her mouth. It means that they are going to get the nourishment they need to fly up and join their parents in the treetops one day. When she turned around and entered the nest, she was greeted by this sound (200K) from the hungry young owlets. They are now at the stage of a young child who is trying to learn to whistle --- At first, all that comes out is air. This hissing will mature into a hissing-whistling sound by the time they reach the fledgling stage. You may hear a faint whistling sound already creeping into Wally's last hiss in this recording. It will be interesting to see how far this develops before he leaves the nest. You might want to go back to the sound library and compare these sounds with the wheezing they did shortly after hatching. Both owlets ate well last night and seem quite content, even though there is no food in the nest today. |
