Mother's Day

may10.jpg (8679 bytes)As Wally and Theodore look up in anticipation of  June's arrival this morning, it's a good time to reflect on some of the amazing things she has done to get them this far: She started by visiting the empty nest over thirty times during the fall and winter to make sure it would be ready for them in the spring. She carried three "Grade A" size eggs in a body that weighs less than two pounds. She incubated those eggs for more than 23 hours a day for over a month. She chased away a dangerous raccoon that might easily have killed her and eaten the eggs. She went without any food for more than forty hours rather than leaving the eggs. She brooded Wally and Theodore continuously for two weeks. She spends many hours each day crunching through bones to break the owlet's food into small pieces. She puts up with Wally and Theodore's constant fighting, wheezing and peeping. She is just outside now, watching over the nest in the cold driving rain as Wally and Theodore wait for their next feeding. I'm sure that she is one mother who will be very happy to see her children climb up that owlet ladder and go out on their own. Happy Mother's Day to all.
