It has
now been 23 days since June started to incubate her first egg. If everything has gone
properly, that egg should hatch sometime next week. Her ever increasing time on the eggs
suggests that they become more sensitive to temperature changes as they mature. She left
them alone in the cold for hours at a time during the first couple of days, but now
limits her excursions from the nest to less than six minutes. Ward called home at about
noon yesterday and she answered several times with her version of the classic hoot (51KB).
Ward made two food deliveries last night and June made a total of three outings from the
nest. June behaved as if she were wearing a stop watch when she left the nest--no trip
lasted for less than five minutes or more than six minutes. She is now sleeping soundly as
shown in this picture.
