Theodore
the owl made his transition from "talking egg" to owlet yesterday (4-21-98),
just as his brother Wally had the day before. June chewed off his egg shell and ate it
after listening to his peeping for more than twenty hours. The last piece of the eggshell
is shown on the floor here at 6:15pm yesterday, just before June ate it. Theodore has
already learned to make the wheezing sound as he competes with Wally for June's attention.
This sound clip features peeping from one
of the owlets overlapping wheezing from the other. Another spectacular sound clip features a variation
of June's chattering as she feeds the owlets while they wheeze and peep. Ward only managed
to make two deliveries last night and the last one came after dawn. Crows were pursuing
him unmercifully as he tried to escape through the denser undergrowth near the ground.
This last delivery was a mouse which June ate immediately. The other delivery had also
been a mouse which was stored for the owlets. June will have to manage the food carefully
today as she has only one mouse and some leftover squirrel. They were spoiled yesterday by
a dove and the first half of the squirrel.
