Wally
the owl fought his way into the world today. He first broke through his shell and started this peeping call last night at
10pm, but did not break out completely until 11:30 this morning. The picture at right
shows the three eggs at 7am today. Though not visible from the top, Wally must have pecked
a hole through the bottom of one of them so that his calls could be heard. When June
decided that it was time for him to come out, she gave him a lot of help by chewing off
pieces of the shell as he struggled. She then cleaned up by eating the shell. Ward
responded to Wally's peeping last night by making five food deliveries. Three mice were
stored inside of the nest box in anticipation of Wally's appetite. June is now
brooding Wally as she incubates her two remaining eggs. He must be one tough owlet to
endure the same rough treatment as the eggs. June will make it difficult for me to get
pictures of Wally as she continues her brooding, but I will post them as soon as they are
available. June is going to have a tough time getting any sleep with Wally's constant
peeping.
