Just when you think you've heard it all! At 9pm last night, Ward made the first of two rainy-night food deliveries. The sound that occurred just after he landed on the owl rail was so different from any other owl sound that it may be the last gasps of his prey recorded in this short (90K) sound file. This is the second time that I have heard this sound in the last two days. If you can identify the chattering sound that occurs at the three-second and again at the six-second point, please let me hear from you at owlbox@owlcam.com
With the arrival of cool rainy weather, June has been spending much more (at least 90%) of her time sleeping. She has also initiated a couple of long distance calls to Ward from the nest. She uses her classic call and may continue for several minutes before Ward answers. When these calls occur at dawn, they appear to be invitations for him to join her in a mutual preening session. At other times, she just settles back down and goes to sleep after he responds. She should be just at the halfway point with her egg incubation.
