Even though
June appears to be getting plenty of food at night, she continued to call
for more throughout the day. Most of her calls were whines with a few
classic hoots mixed in, but there was also one new call that was a very strange
mixture of these two calls. This
new call starts with an abbreviated classic hoot and then abruptly
changes into a whine. Ward did come through with a mouse delivered
directly to the door at 10am, but June continued to complain and even left
the nest for about two minutes to pursue a squirrel. Her tail can be seen
here as she sat in the doorway just before diving at the squirrel.
She missed and was back on her eggs in less than two minutes. With
the owlets due any day now, she appears to be pushing things to the limits
to assure that she and Ward are ready to provide for the family. |
