After
more than a dozen failures, Spencer finally put it all together and made a
perfect leap to the door. When he got up there, he looked perfectly at
home and even snapped at some smaller birds that approached him. He
remained in the door for almost ten minutes as he scanned the area and
took in every new sight. Penelope remained on the floor looking up at him,
but showed little interest in trying to make the climb herself. When he
finally did fall back down into the nest, he landed squarely on top of her
and then proceeded to flap his wings as he leaped excitedly around the
nest box floor. Less than a half hour later, he was back up in the doorway
for a five minute stay as Penelope again stayed behind on the floor to
look up and wheeze. He made a total of four trips before darkness and his
confidence seemed to grown with each one. While there were no food
deliveries to allow him to check out the advantages of his new position,
that should come in the next few days. I only hope that his new confidence
does not lead to a premature attempt at departing the nest all together. |
