Growing Stronger

June continues to be the only daytime hunter, while Ward sleeps all day and joins in at sunset. June is shown here delivering a short-tailed shrew which is the most common daytime catch, and the perfect size for an owlet to down in one gulp. While this was a peaceful delivery, the crows are now wise to her daytime activity and were in hot pursuit on her next two deliveries. On both occasions she was forced to take refuge in the nest. This is one advantage that she has over Ward, who will not enter the nest even under the most desperate of circumstances. June's night time deliveries are much more leisurely and she often sits  on a nearby branch and teases the owlets for several minutes with her wailing call. This wailing call was recorded last night as she sat outside the nest and is followed by Spencer's wheezing response inside.
In spite of June's encouragement, there was only one more attempt by Spencer to get to the door. He got a little further this time, but again fell back when he was unable to clasp the owlet steps with his talons. That's just as well because he needs a few more days of intense eating before he will be strong enough to have a good chance of surviving outside the nest. Penelope is shown here looking up toward the roof in response to a sound that attracted her attention above the nest. The owlets almost always hear June's approach before it is picked up by the microphones that are just over her head.
