It
didn't seem like such a big deal to me when June delivered a small lizard to the
nest this morning, but it was a very big deal for Spencer. Even though he was
in front, June chose to reach around him and give the lizard to Penelope.
This sent Spencer into his wild "frogman" routine in which
he lies on his belly and pushes himself around the nest by thrashing his
feet and kicking up a wake of wood chips. He left no chip unturned as he
tore around the nest for the next five minutes. He then got up and started
flapping his wings frantically as he looked up at the door. Finally, he was
ready to make another attempt at getting to the doorway and this
time he came very close making it. He is shown here as he hung by his beak
just before he fell back into the nest. He was, however, up there for long
enough to get a glimpse of the outside world and I'm sure that there
will be many more efforts in the next few days. Perching in the doorway is
the best way for him to be sure that he will get the first crack at future
food deliveries. Penelope could only look up at him and wheeze at
the prospect. |
