Now
that June is free to hunt, Ward is confining his efforts to the night time
and leaving it to June to provide any daytime meals. There were three such
meals today and on each occasion June arrived at the nest in a swarm of
harassing birds. It was therefore convenient for her to enter the nest,
both to escape the harassment and to divide up the prey between the
owlets. They are shown here as they wheezed in anticipation of
June's arrival. They were alerted to her approach by the sound of the harassing
birds, which they have learned to associate with food. The big feedings,
however, again came after dark, when Ward and June delivered food until
the owlets were too full to wheeze. Spencer made no more leaps toward the
door today, but did spend a lot of time looking up at it as he is seen
doing here. After seeing hundreds of meals come through that door in the
last few weeks, they must think it would be a great place to be. |
