After a
night of almost constant feedings, the owlets were again forced to go
through the day without food. It was an extraordinarily cold day for this
time of year with temperatures in the 30s and even a bit of snow. June
stayed in the nest all day to keep them warm, and they did very little
complaining. Tonight, however, is a different story. June left the nest
just after sunset to join in the hunt and had not entered the nest again
by midnight. While she and Ward have delivered a record eleven prey items,
it is just piling up on the floor as the owlets frantic wheezing signals
their frustration. When the hunting is this good, however, June is going
to take full advantage of it and she knows that the owlets can wait. I
expect a real food riot when she finally does enter the nest. This should
also provide additional incentive for them to learn to eat food without
her help. |
