Mother's Day

June is having a very nice Mother's Day. Ward brought home a gray squirrel and several other large items last night, so that there is plenty of food in the nest today. June is therefore able to feed the owlets as much as they can eat, so that the feeding sessions are much quieter and more orderly.  She often pauses during the  feedings to stare intently at the owlets as she is seen doing here. This usually happens when one of them is facing a difficult challenge, such as eating an unusually large bite of prey, or dealing with the other owlet's aggressive behavior. She spends so much time doing this that I have named it "the look" and suspect that it provides essential information that allows her to know how each owlet is developing and what individual help they might need. When she is not feeding or staring at the owlets, she is usually preening them to assure that they are perfectly clean.

Things went so smoothly this morning that she was able to get out of the nest for a thirty minute visit with Ward at 2pm. They are shown together here after she joined him in a tree about 200 feet from the nest box. While she often looked back toward the nest to make sure the owlets were safe, she and Ward did a lot of wild hooting as if to celebrate the progress their family is making. They spent most of their time preening each other's heads and faces as these are the areas that are most difficult for them to reach for themselves. When she returned to the nest, she was greeted by two wheezing owlets who were already eager for their next meal. She immediately went back to work by ripping the squirrel into small pieces and feeding them to the eager owlets. These greetings should become even more spirited as June joins in the hunt over the next few days and spends more time outside the nest.
