When the
sun came up this morning, Penelope was the only one with an egg tooth.
Spencer had lost his overnight to earn the distinction of being the most
mature owlet. This honor did not, however, last for long as Penelope's
tooth disappeared before noon. Notice that June has them trapped under
opposite wings so that there is a lot less fighting during meals. In spite
of this, Spencer still managed to reach far enough to steal a couple of
bites of Penelope's food, but both got plenty at this morning feeding
session. June did, however, run out of food just after noon, so that the
owlets were forced to do without until after dark. After getting no
response to her calls for Ward to replenish their supply, June became
impatient and went on a short hunting trip herself just after dark.
She returned with something 15 minutes later and had just started to feed
it to the owlets when Ward showed up with his first delivery of the night.
For the next twenty minutes, there was a lot of very loud bone crunching
and wheezing, which indicates that Ward's delivery was a substantial one. |
