I've
heard both of the owlets wheezing over the past two days and caught this
distant view of Penelope just before sunset today. She was more than fifty
feet up in an ash tree and seemed quite at home as she leaped from branch
to branch. There is something about ash trees that attracts flightless
owlets, and I assume it's the long arching branches that make for easy climbing.
I've not yet seen Spencer, but can hear his wheezing coming from deeper in
the woods. They should be getting together soon, as each becomes more
mobile and more concerned about being left out of a meal. June has been
roosting fairly close to the owlets, while Ward has called home from his
typical roosting spot far to the north. Both swing into action when the
sun goes down and start delivering food to the wheezing owlets, much as
they did when they were in the nest. It will be at least a week before
they are able to do any serious flying and much longer than that before
they learn to hunt for their own food. |
