| June continues to be so diligent with her incubating that it has been impossible for me to even tell how many eggs she is covering. While two is the most common number for barred owls, June has defied the odds and produced three eggs in each of the past two years. I will not venture a guess, but hope she will make a brief daylight trip to the door so that I can have a look in the next few days. She is shown here in a position where she will spend several hours before rotating to face in the other direction for the next few hours. After each turn, she rocks from side to side to drive the eggs into a new position. This serves to rotate the eggs every couple of hours which is essential if they are to remain viable. She left the nest twice last night in response to Ward's monkey calls, but was back in less than ten minutes on both occasions. Ward also made one food delivery directly to the door and June again greeted it with wild squealing. She looks so content in the nest that I must assume she is getting plenty to eat. |
