Sounds of Life

When June rushed up into the doorway and flew away tonight, a new sound could just be heard over the wind and rain. It was the peeping sound of an owlet struggling to break out of its shell. The sound was so weak that it was probably the beginning of a struggle that will continue throughout the night as June waits till she thinks it's time to remove the shell. As the peeping continued, June and Ward could be heard hooting excitedly near the nest until June returned and muffled the peeping sound by resuming incubation of  the eggs. Ward, however, appeared to have gotten the word and made eight food deliveries in the next two hours. It will be interesting to see if some of the prey is stored on the floor in the morning as normally happens when an owlet is about to hatch. If that happens, you can be sure that June will be helping the owlet out of its shell very soon.
