As a
rain-soaked Ward sat on his favorite perch this morning, he looked like he
had been through a war. He had managed only one food delivery through the
cold windy night and was trying his best to ignore June's calls from the
nest and get a little sleep. He did not respond or show any sign of
activity until late morning when he woke up to look down at a squirrel
that was scampering through the underbrush seventy feet below him. After
sizing up several critters over the next two hours, he dove in the
direction of one of them and disappeared into the woods. Just a minute
later, his distant monkey call told June that he had come through again,
and she immediately flew out to meet him. She returned ten minutes later
and spent the rest of the day quietly incubating her eggs. Ward is
spending a lot more time close to the nest as the expected hatching day
approaches. |
