There
were seven food deliveries last night, which would normally be more than
enough to keep June quiet during the day. This was not, however, the case
this time as she resumed her whining immediately after each food delivery
and continued it for two hours just before dawn. I'm not sure what is
bothering her, but it was enough to cause her to call to Ward with her
first classic hoot from the nest all season, just after noon. This call
inspired him to do a little daylight hunting and show up at the nest with
a large garter snake at 1:30pm. He is shown here sticking his head through
the door to offer the snake to June. She quickly reached up and grabbed
the snake from him and swallowed it whole in less than a minute. This was
enough to quiet her for the rest of the day as she slept peacefully on her
eggs. I am still at a loss as to why the large number of nighttime food
deliveries are not enough to satisfy her appetite |
