Slow Progress

Emmett made many trips to the door today and stayed up there for as long as five minutes. He looks like he is almost ready to go, but has not yet reached for the owl rail or attempted to climb down to it. Abigail and Ernie, however,  still have a lot of work to do. While Ernie always manages to leap high enough when June shows up as he is seen doing here, he has not attempted to reach the door while she is away.  Instead, he spent his day whining wheezing and throwing wood chips all over the other owlets. They don't seem to be bothered by his antics and just stare at him when he does it. June delivered two mice today and each delivery set off a wild round of wheezing and leaping for the door. This suggests that Ward and June are indeed cutting back on their food.
Abigail made a couple of serious attempts to get to the door, but still hasn't gotten the footwork right. She jumps more than high enough to make it into the doorway, but always falls back after hanging by her beak for a while as she is seen doing here. She just can't seem to find the owlet steps with her feet. It is, however, largely a matter of motivation and I'm sure she will figure it out soon. I expect all of the owlets to be much more active tomorrow. Ward continues to roost in a distant part of the territory and called home at around noon today. The owlets were asleep in the nest when he called, but quickly snapped their heads in his direction and started wheezing.
