If
Ward always got his way, there would be no room service in the daytime. He
is much more comfortable having June come out to pick up his catches on a
secluded perch nearby. When he arrived with a mouse late this afternoon,
he tried his best to coax her out with his monkey call and by dangling the
mouse in front of her from his perch. As June watched him from the
doorway, she was equally determined to have it delivered and squealed at
him repeatedly. If she had been low on food, she would have given in and
gone over to get it, but that was not the case today. She already had more
food than she could give away inside the nest and was prepared to wait him
out. The owlets joined the fracas by wheezing loudly as they looked up at
June's tail from the floor (picture). This combination was too much for Ward
who finally gave in and flew over to give her the mouse from the owl
rail. The hunting has been better this year than ever before, so
that the owlets are developing rapidly and June is wining a lot of these
contests. It's raining and windy this afternoon, so that hunting may be a
bit more of a challenge tonight. |
