When dawn
broke, there was no food in the nest box. June had already split up the
four deliveries that Ward had made that night and was waiting for the
daylight delivery she had become accustomed to. Unfortunately the crows
and jays were also waiting and drove him away before he could deliver his
prey. After things quieted down, June flew out looking for him three times
before they finally connected. When she returned, I discovered why the
birds were so upset. She was carrying a blue jay in her right foot as she
carefully landed on the rail with her left. She continued flapping her
wings to keep her balance as she transferred the jay to her beak and
climbed in the door. Emmett and Abigail are shown here as they wait their
turn while June feeds Ernie part of the jay. She made three meals of it,
and all of the owlets seemed to get enough. In spite of his efforts, June
again refused to answer Ward's call home this afternoon. Guess he will
have to bring in even more to keep her happy. |
