Welcome Visits

There was again plenty of food in the nest at sunrise and Ward managed to add another blue jay before noon. June spent most of the day perched outside the nest as the owlets continued to practice their flying by making winged leaps across the floor. They will not however eat any of the food left in the nest unless June returns to give it to them. She must therefore enter the nest several times each day to feed them. She also made two visits in which she just looked inside as she is seen doing here, without entering. She whined to them several times before leaving and they responded with a lot of wheezing.  Late this afternoon a thunder storm hit the area for the first time since the owlets hatched. They all reacted calmly to the new sounds, but Emmett dug a hole in the woodchips and spent the next hour sleeping in it. I'm not sure just why he did this, but he looked comfortable enough and climbed out for the next meal. Ward now expects June to be out of the nest and calls to her when he arrives with food. She responds with squeals, just as she does when she is in the nest, and he delivers the food to her.
