Abigail
the owl did not allow Emmett to be an only owlet for long. She peeped and
wheezed until June helped her out of her shell just hours after her
brother was hatched. This should allow them to grow at about the same rate
as they compete on equal footing for June's attention. Both of the owlets
spent the rest of the day sleeping under June, but woke up just after
midnight for a very loud meal. Ward made two food deliveries shortly after
dark and one more before dawn. He is now sunning himself on his
favorite perch and has already called home once this morning. This picture
of Emmett and Abigail was taken when June raised up to look at them just
after Ward's call. One of last night's food deliveries was a large bird
which remains in the nest to see them through the day.
