| Nothing ever comes easy for Seymour and it was beginning to look like he was the forgotten owlet. After being well taken care of on Sunday, his wheezing went unanswered all day yesterday, and I suspect that he was not fed last night. He was peeping while huddled in the corner of the nest box when June suddenly landed on the owl rail. He bounded up to the door to greet her, but she brought no food. As she started to preen his head, she suddenly looked around (top picture) to see Ward land on a nearby branch. She spun around with such force to go out and meet him (bottom picture) that she knocked Seymour to the floor of the nest box. Only a second later, she returned with the large mouse that Ward had brought and gave it to Seymour who had already climbed back up to the door. His good fortune continued when she came back with a squirrel just ten minutes later and fed him until he could eat no more. She then took the rest of the squirrel and flew away to feed one of her branching owlets. I can hear both of them wheezing for food at night, but have not seen them due to the dense foliage. Seymour looks ready to go out and join them, but may think he has too good a deal in the nest box. That could be the reason that June cut back on his food yesterday. |
