| Seymour's will to live proved stronger than the challenges he faced and the littlest owlet now rules the nest box. Just a few hours earlier, things had looked very bad for Seymour as the older owlets had the door hopelessly blocked and he was trapped on the floor where June could not see him. He was getting weaker and no longer scurried toward the door when June arrived with food; but he had not given up. He was just conserving his energy and waiting for his opportunity. He saw that opportunity when sunlight streamed through the opening that was created next to Emily when Rufus left the nest. Just as he had done so many times before, he struggled with all of the energy he had until he reached his goal. When his head popped out into the sunlight (upper picture), I knew that he was a survivor. He now had a spot where June could not miss him, and things got even better when Emily left the nest a few minutes later. Imagine June's surprise when she returned with a squirrel and found only Seymour there to greet her in the doorway. She gave him as much as he could eat (bottom picture) before responding to the distant wheezing of the older owlets and taking Seymour's "leftovers" to them. She has been back to feed him many times since then and he is now spending most of his time in the doorway. He should be strong enough to leave the nest in the next few days. |
