Only minutes after watching her brother disappear into the
treetops, Emily made her own bold jump to the owl rail. She also took the
more difficult path over the new camera enclosure and made the dangerous
winged leap to the rooftop. She is shown here looking up for Rufus before
attempting her jump to the trunk on the left. I don't know what's wrong
with the trunk on the right, which would not require a leap, but all of
the owlets have chosen the one on the left. Even though her view had been
blocked when Rufus made his leap, she landed within inches of the spot he
had hit and followed the same path that all of the owlets before her
had taken. |
After
climbing more than fifty feet up the giant pine tree, Emily did something
that remains the greatest mystery of this year's owlet adventures. She
jumped off of the tree and fluttered to the ground to start a search for
another roosting spot. She is shown here getting ready to jump off of
another branch on her way to the perfect roosting spot. While she had
hundreds of choices in the densely wooded area, she was drawn mysteriously
to the exact tree where Wally and Theodore spent their first two weeks in
1998. There were no adults around to guide her and I could not believe my
eyes as she climbed to the very roosting branch that they had used. She is
now in the perfect spot and I hope that Rufus will join her there when he
leaves the giant pine tree. Click Seymour's Day
to find out what he was up to while all this was happening. |
