Emily had
seen a few robins and blue jays as she sat in the doorway with Rufus
yesterday, but never anything like the giant bird that was flying right at
her. As she jumped back into the nest box to avoid it, Rufus was not
alarmed. He had seen June fly in with a mouse before and was able to grab
an uncontested meal (picture) before Emily realized what was happening. I'm sure
that Emily will be ready next time. Meanwhile, Seymour was jumping high
enough to bite their feet as they perched in the doorway, but could not
find a way to squeeze into the already crowded opening. He has not quit
wheezing since, but probably got fed during the three nest entries that June
made last night. He is four weeks old today, so that he also
should be mature enough to make it outside the nest box. The older owlets
have still not summoned the courage to jump to the owl rail, but have been
studying it very carefully as they spend more of their time in the
doorway. They have each made several more trips to the door this
morning as Seymour remains behind wheezing |
