Daytime Visit

Ward and June are now doing almost all of their hunting at night and leaving the owlets home alone during the day. June does, however, stop by a couple of times each day to make sure the owlets are ok and preen them. She is shown here just after landing for one of these visits. In this case, a crow was in hot pursuit and buzzed her a couple of times as she sat defiantly on the rail. Inside, the owlets have heard her landing and are wheezing excitedly in anticipation of her visit. Seymour is  the independent one up front and often wanders around the nest while Rufus and Emily stick together. They still push him around a lot, but let him take his place between them when he chooses. Rufus and Emily can now scratch their faces with one foot while balanced on the other. This is something adults do a lot and I suspect it's why the feathers on their faces are always so neat.

It's a beautiful spring day and Ward is resting from another incredible night of hunting. Again, he and June delivered more than a dozen meals before midnight and several more before dawn. The owlets appear to have learned to get by without daytime meals, just as adults do.
