For the first
time since she laid the second egg, June took an extended daylight outing
and left the owlets home alone this morning. That's Rufus on the left with
Emily pressing down on his head and little Seymour stretching to get in
the picture on the right. Seymour is only about half as big as the others,
but somehow managed to avoid being knocked down for more than an hour.
That's much better than he did yesterday, when he almost missed the
biggest meal of the day. While June will give him his share if she sees
and hears him, it's up to him to fight his way to the front. He got
trapped behind Rufus and Emily and struggled for more than ten minutes as
they took all the food. After many unsuccessful attempts to crawl over and
around them, he finally tunneled his way between them and popped up in the
best feeding position. Unfortunately, the meal was almost over and June
gave him only a few remaining scraps. When the next meal started an hour
later, Seymour still held his favored position and June rewarded him with
the biggest share. Courage and persistence are rewarded in the owl world. |
