Ward and
June are now in their fourth nesting season and the experience is showing.
Ward set a new record with four food deliveries last night and June did
not leave her eggs for more than three minutes. While the hazards of
living in the wild limit the Barred Owl's average life span to about seven
years, this does not mean that six-year-old owls such as Ward and June are
approaching senility. Barred Owls have been known to live for more than
twenty five years in captivity, so that Ward and June may live for many
more years before they reach their prime. As you might guess, there was no
whining this morning as a well-fed June slept comfortably. She got the
squealing out of her system last night as she greeted each food delivery
with this
outburst.
