Emily the owl cracked her shell and started peeping just
before sunset yesterday. You can hear Emily and Rufus wheezing through the
loud galloping sound
that June made as she fed them last night. While Emily's first
sound was the peeping sound, she had also learned to make the wheezing
sound within a few hours and was using it to compete for June's attention
during feedings. Even though she and Rufus will continue to peep for some
time, it is the wheezing sound that is best for getting food. The
owlets have not given June much rest as they are clamoring for food about
twice each hour. The picture shows June as she eats the last bits of
Rufus' shell just before Emily hatched. She always eats the shells
after she removes them from the owlets. June continues to hide the owlets
so well that I have not been able to get a picture of them. Ward had a
very good night and the nest box is well stocked with fresh mice. He has
convinced me that he is now a strong enough hunter to support three owlets.
I will
post a picture of the owlets as soon as June allows me to. |
