As June
waits for her first egg to hatch, she has already started rehearsing the chattering
sound that she makes when she feeds an owlet. It was first recorded a
few days before the first owlet hatched in 1998 and referred to as the mystery
sound. After Wally hatched, it developed into the full blown galloping
sound that she repeated as the owlets snatched food from her beak.
With rain pouring down throughout the night, Ward had a tough time and was
not able to make his second food delivery until 6am. The chattering was
recorded just after he departed. This picture shows June in one of her
rare waking moments as she has slept for most of the day. The bad weather
is scheduled to continue through the weekend so that Ward will have his
work cut out for him if an owlet hatches before Monday. |
