Ward's toes
can just be seen in the doorway as June munches on the mouse that he
delivered at dawn. Even though it was her second meal of the night, it was
not enough to satisfy her, so she whined until Ward made another delivery
attempt one hour later. By then, the crows were waiting for him and drove
him away before he could make the delivery. June appeared to be
sufficiently impressed with his effort and has not whined since. She took
only one four-minute outing last night as the temperature again dropped
below freezing. While the crows do not appear to be capable of harming the
owls, their mobbing tactics are certainly effective in curtailing daylight
activities. Ward just called home with his classic hoot and June responded
enthusiastically. (2:45pm) |
